One lake, two townships, two counties
Whitmore Lake is not a city or a village. It is an unincorporated community with a 48189 mailing address, and that address spreads across two townships and two counties. The south and east sides of the lake, including Main Street, are Northfield Township in Washtenaw County. The north end crosses 8 Mile Road into Green Oak Township in Livingston County.
None of that changes the truck we send. We cover the whole lake community, both shores. What it does change is how you describe where you are. "Whitmore Lake" could mean a launch lot on the water, a subdivision off Whitmore Lake Road, or a shoulder on US-23 miles from the water. Give us the cross street and which side of 8 Mile you are on, and the driver takes the right exit the first time.
US-23: exits 53 and 54, and the Flex Route
US-23 is the reason most Whitmore Lake calls exist. It carries the Livingston County commute into Ann Arbor every weekday, and the two Whitmore Lake exits, 53 on the south end of town and 54 at 8 Mile Road, are where that commute breaks down. Between M-14 and M-36 the highway is the Flex Route: at rush hour the median shoulder opens as an extra lane in the peak direction. Do not stop on the left. Get to the right shoulder, as far onto it as the car will go, with hazards on.
Then tell dispatch three things: northbound or southbound, the last exit you passed, and what the vehicle is. A dead alternator northbound at exit 53 and a flat southbound past exit 54 get trucks approaching from different directions, and knowing which saves the driver a trip to turn around.
Whitmore Lake Road, 8 Mile, and North Territorial
Off the highway, the calls come from three roads. Whitmore Lake Road runs parallel to US-23 on the west side, from the north edge of Ann Arbor up through town, with subdivisions and lake-front drives off it. 8 Mile Road crosses US-23 at exit 54 and is the county line between Washtenaw and Livingston. North Territorial Road, at exit 49, is the way west to Dexter and how rural Northfield Township reaches the highway.
All three have long stretches with gravel shoulders and ditches close to the pavement. A car that drops a wheel off the edge of North Territorial in February is a winch-out first and a tow second. The off-pavement add-on applies when the truck has to leave the road surface to reach you, and dispatch says so on the call, not after.
Summer: the launch, the trailers, and the weekend
From Memorial Day to Labor Day the lake fills up, and so does the road near the boat launch. Summer calls look nothing like commuter calls. A tow vehicle that will not start after sitting at the launch all day. A trailer tire shredded on Whitmore Lake Road on the way in. A pickup that backed too far down a soft ramp. A jump-start or a tire change handles most of it in place, and the winch handles the rest.
Tell dispatch whether a trailer is attached and what is on it. Whether the trailer moves on the same call depends on what it is, and you hear the answer before a truck is sent. Weekend lake traffic slows the last mile, so a Saturday in July carries a different ETA than a Tuesday in March.
Twenty-two miles from Ypsilanti, honestly
Whitmore Lake is one of the farthest points we serve. From our base in Ypsilanti the run is about 22 miles, most of it north on US-23 past Ann Arbor and through the Flex Route. We will not tell you a number of minutes we cannot keep. What we will tell you is where the closest truck is right now. Often one is already in Ann Arbor on another job, cutting the drive. Sometimes the closest truck is south of I-94 and the honest ETA is longer. You hear it on the call.
Distance also shapes the price. Towing is a hook-up fee plus loaded miles from where we hook you to where the car is going, with add-ons only for holidays, winching past the first fifteen minutes, off-pavement recovery, and vehicles that need extra equipment to load. Call dispatch for a quote; the price is confirmed before a truck is sent, and the miles to your shop are part of what dispatch reads back to you. Two things help that quote land right: the destination, and what the car is. An all-wheel-drive wagon, an EV, a lowered car, or one with a wheel pointing the wrong way rides fully off the ground on a flatbed, carried rather than dragged, and dispatch needs to know that in Ypsilanti, not at exit 54.
Where Whitmore Lake tows usually go
Whitmore Lake is small, and most tows leave town. The usual destinations are the dealership service departments on Jackson Road and State Street in Ann Arbor, the independent shops off Plymouth Road, and a dealership in Brighton for drivers who bought there. A shorter option a lot of commuters take is light-duty towing to their own driveway in Northfield or Green Oak, then sorting out the shop in daylight.
Whitmore Lake's neighbors on our map are Ann Arbor to the south and Dexter to the southwest along North Territorial Road, and the same dispatch line covers all of them. If you are farther up US-23 toward the I-96 interchange, call 734-985-0010 and ask; dispatch will say plainly whether we are the right truck for that call.
Questions
Frequently asked
My address says Whitmore Lake but I'm in Green Oak Township. Do you still come?
Yes. The 48189 mailing address covers both Northfield Township in Washtenaw County and Green Oak Township in Livingston County, and the lake itself sits on the line. We treat the whole lake community as one service area. Tell dispatch your cross street and which side of 8 Mile Road you're on so the driver takes the right exit. Farther north toward I-96, ask; dispatch will say plainly whether we're the right truck for that call.
I broke down on US-23 near Whitmore Lake. What should I tell dispatch?
Direction of travel, the last exit you passed, and what the car is. Exit 53 serves the south end of town and exit 54 is 8 Mile Road on the north end. This stretch is the Flex Route, where the median shoulder becomes a travel lane at rush hour, so stop on the right shoulder only, as far off the white line as the car will go, hazards on. Dispatch confirms the price and gives you a real ETA before the truck rolls.
Can you tow my truck with the boat trailer still attached?
Tell dispatch what is attached and what is on it. The tow vehicle itself is a routine light-duty tow, loaded and secured the same way as any pickup or SUV. Whether the trailer can move on the same call depends on its size, weight, and condition, and dispatch will give you that answer before anything is sent rather than at the launch. If the trailer has to stay, the launch lot is usually the safest place to leave it while the truck goes to the shop.
How long does it take you to reach Whitmore Lake from Ypsilanti?
We do not quote a number of minutes we cannot keep. The run is about 22 miles, most of it north on US-23, and the ETA depends on where the closest truck is when you call and what traffic is doing between Ann Arbor and the lake. Often a truck is already north of M-14 on another job, which shortens it. Dispatch gives you the real ETA on the call, and if something changes on the way, you get a call back.
