The honest part first: Chelsea is a long run for us

Chelsea is the farthest west we go. We are based in Ypsilanti, and the drive out is about 26 miles, nearly all of it on I-94. When you call, dispatch checks where the closest truck actually is. It is often already working in Ann Arbor or Dexter, which shortens the run. Either way you get a real drive time on the phone, and if it does not work for you, say so and no truck rolls.

The call is still worth making. Dispatch gives you the full price on the phone, and you say yes before a truck heads west. If your vehicle is headed east, toward a dealer in Ann Arbor or a shop near Ypsilanti, the truck is driving home with your car loaded and secured, and that is the leg we price by the loaded mile on top of the hook-up fee. A dead battery, a locked door, or a flat gets fixed in place, so you are not paying for a tow you do not need. Either way you leave with an itemized receipt you can hand to your insurer, since we do not bill insurance directly.

Exit 159 and the I-94 shoulder

Exit 159 is the M-52 interchange, where the highway meets the town. Westbound breakdowns between Jackson Road at exit 162 and Chelsea are the simplest calls we run out here, because our truck is already headed that way and pulls in behind you. Eastbound is different. The truck has to pass you, get off at exit 159 or Pierce Road at exit 157, and come back. That doubling back is real time, so give dispatch the direction of travel and the nearest mile marker or exit, not just a town name.

The shoulder out here is narrow and traffic runs fast. Get as far right as you can, hazards on. If the car will limp to the exit 159 ramp or the M-52 lots, tell dispatch and we meet you there instead. Light-duty towing covers cars, SUVs, pickups, and work vans, and dispatch sends the right truck for your vehicle. Anything bigger than that is commercial or oversized work and is quoted per job.

M-52, Old US-12, and the township grid

M-52 is Main Street through downtown, then two-lane road in both directions, north along the edge of the Waterloo Recreation Area toward Stockbridge and south toward Manchester through open farm ground. Old US-12 crosses it and heads east toward Dexter and Ann Arbor, where it becomes Jackson Road. Dexter-Chelsea Road, Werkner Road, and Cavanaugh Lake Road fill in the grid around the city.

Most of that grid has no shoulder, deep ditches, and long dark stretches between crossroads. A Chelsea mailing address covers Sylvan, Lima, and Lyndon Townships, so the town name alone does not tell a driver where to go. Name the road and the nearest cross road. If you are on a gravel drive, a lake access, or a trailhead lot inside Waterloo, say so. Off-pavement work is an add-on we quote up front, and it changes which truck we send.

Two seasons that fill the Chelsea call log

Winter brings the ditch calls. Snow drifts across the open fields along M-52 south of town, and the Waterloo roads ice before the state highways do. Most of those cars are stuck, not broken, and a winch-out puts them back on pavement to drive away. The first fifteen minutes of winching are included. A car buried nose-down past that costs more, and dispatch says so before the truck rolls. If the car took damage going in, the same truck tows it.

Riding season brings the motorcycles. M-52 and the loop roads through Waterloo are among the better rides in the county, and a bike that quits out there is a long push. Motorcycle towing means soft straps and wheel chocks so the bike rides upright and fully off the ground, carried, not dragged. Late August adds the Chelsea Community Fair, when the lots fill and lockout and jump-start calls climb with them.

Downtown lots, the hospital, and where Chelsea tows end up

Inside the city the calls are quieter: a dead battery near the railroad tracks, a lockout at the hospital campus on South Main Street, a flat in the retail lots along Old US-12. Those get fixed where the car sits and rarely need a tow.

The ones that do go east more often than west. A dealership on Jackson Road in Ann Arbor is a straight run on I-94 or Old US-12, and it is the most common long tow we make from Chelsea. Shops in Chelsea itself are short loaded miles and priced that way. A tow west toward Jackson is possible, but the far end is outside our service area and dispatch quotes it per job.

What to have ready when you call

The road, not just the town. The nearest cross road, exit number, or mile marker, plus direction of travel on I-94. Year, make, and model, and whether it is all-wheel-drive, electric, lowered, or damaged, since those vehicles ride on a flatbed, fully off the ground, and dispatch needs to know that before a truck is chosen. Where it needs to go. With those four things dispatch picks the right truck for your vehicle, confirms the price, and gives you the honest drive time in one call to 734-985-0010.

From Chelsea we also cover Dexter, just east on Dexter-Chelsea Road, and Ann Arbor beyond it. If you are between them, dispatch does not need to know which page applies. The same trucks go everywhere.

Questions

Frequently asked

How long does it take you to reach Chelsea?

Longer than it takes us to reach Ann Arbor or Dexter. Chelsea is our farthest-west service area, and the truck usually comes out I-94 from Ypsilanti. Dispatch checks where the closest truck is when you call, since it may already be working west of Ann Arbor, and gives you the drive time before you decide. If you would rather wait for someone closer, say so. We would rather you have a real number than a guess.

My address says Chelsea but I'm out in Sylvan or Lyndon Township. Do you still come?

Yes. A Chelsea mailing address covers far more than the city limits, since Sylvan, Lima, and Lyndon Townships all use 48118. Dispatch does not care which side of the line you are on. What matters is a road name and the nearest cross road, because much of the township grid is unlit two-lane with long gaps between intersections. If you are on a private drive or a lake access road, say so and we send the truck that can handle it.

Can you tow my car from Chelsea to a dealer in Ann Arbor?

That is one of the most common Chelsea tows we run. The dealers on Jackson Road are a straight shot east on I-94 or Old US-12, and the price is the hook-up fee plus the loaded miles, confirmed by dispatch before the truck is sent. After hours we can leave the vehicle in the dealer's lot and use the key drop if they have one. Tell dispatch the dealer name and whether the service department is expecting you.

I slid into a ditch on one of the Waterloo roads. Is that a tow or a winch-out?

Usually a winch-out first. Most ditch calls on the two-lanes around the Waterloo Recreation Area are cars that are stuck, not broken, and once the truck pulls you back onto pavement you drive away. If the car took damage going in, or it is sitting far enough off the road that it needs more than a straight pull, the same truck loads it and tows it once it is back on solid ground. Winching past the first fifteen minutes and off-pavement recovery are add-ons dispatch explains before the truck rolls.
